A rare activity where the releasing of 160 baby Olive Ridley Sea turtles took place in Wellawatta. The release took place at dusk where the babies are at least risk during release.
Sri Lanka Coast Guard along with turtle rescue experts have provided safety for these turtles where the eggs were laid in Wellawatta.
Turtles laying eggs in an urban shoreline is rare since increase in pollution deters turtles from coming ashore.
Volunteers from The Pearl Protectors along with local residents joined into witness the first steps of these turtles to the sea.
It is estimated that only 1 in 1000 turtle babies will grow up to be juveniles and return ashore to lay eggs.
Here’s hoping that some of these young ones return back.
