Awareness precedes change
Behavioral commitments play a crucial role in halting further pollution. By conducting sessions in schools, universities, public places and online, to increase the awareness on protecting our marine environment, the imminent threat posed by plastic to marine life, as well as humans who are no longer immune due to microplastics, The Pearl Protectors encourages individuals at all ages to make a personal choice to say no to single-use plastics. The sessions are more interactive as participants engage in filtering out microplastics in sand collected from the beach with a sieve, identifying personal care products with microbeads and building eco-bricks that are later turned into useful structures.
A campaign that stands out is the building of a Christmas tree out of discarded plastic bottles accumulated from beaches. The annual “PET Bottle Christmas Tree” that’s built and placed throughout Christmas, is aimed at creating a conversation on the plastic menace among beachgoers.
